LOGAN — A 45-year-old Logan man is going to spend an additional 6 months behind bars for identity fraud and sexually assaulting a woman while she was asleep, in two separate cases. Jose Antonio Torres-Medina will remain in the Cache County Jail until March 2025 after a judge ordered him to serve more time.

Torres-Medina was sentenced Sept. 25 in Logan’s 1st District Court. He previously accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to four counts of identity fraud and communication fraud, all second-degree felonies; and sexual battery, amended to a class A misdemeanor.

Prosecutors report a woman contacted Logan City Police officers in January 2023, explaining how she was sexually assaulted by Torres, who she had previously been in a relationship with. She described how on the night of Nov. 11, 2022, she had taken medication that left her feeling drowsy and dizzy. She stated how she went to sleep but later woke up to signs that she had been sexually assaulted.

Officers later questioned Torres. He said the sex was consensual, although he said the woman never spoke or did anything during the incident.

As the investigation continued, police found multiple false ID documents in Torres’ possession.

Court records show, Torres was previously arrested for physically assaulting the same woman. He also violated a protective order, she had filed against him.

During the sentencing hearing, defense attorney Cameron Cox acknowledged Torres was using two different Social Security cards for years. He claimed his client didn’t realize it was a crime.

The victim however told the court that Torres knew what he was doing was wrong. She explained how he had sexually assaulted her for years. He would also open credit accounts in her name.

Judge Brian Cannell sided with the victim and ordered Torres, who has been in jail since February 2023, to serve 180 more days behind bars. He also ordered him to have no contact with the victim.
