BEAR LAKE COUNTY, Idaho — A 71-year-old Ovid man died Thursday morning after losing control of an ATV on North Road in Bear Lake County, according to the Idaho State Police.

The crash occurred around 11:12 a.m. on North Road, just west of Johnson Road.

Troopers said the man was riding a Polaris Sportsman eastbound when he swerved abruptly to avoid colliding with an oncoming GMC Savana driven westbound by a 22-year-old Nibley, Utah, man.

The ATV went off the south side of the road, struck a concrete barrier and overturned.

Emergency responders transported the rider by ground ambulance to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Police noted the ATV rider was not wearing a helmet, while the driver of the GMC was wearing a seatbelt.

The incident caused no lane blockages, and the crash remains under investigation by state police.
