LOGAN – During a regular meeting of the Logan Municipal Council on Feb. 17, Mayor Mark Anderson announced events that will mark the city’s participation in the nationwide “America 250” celebration.

Anderson explained that this multi-faceted initiative will span through all of 2026 and focus on education, community engagement, inspiration and events to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States in July of 2026.

“This is a unique opportunity to partner with Utah State University, the Logan City School District, Logan city employees, neighboring communities and residents to make a difference for others and create memories for a lifetime,” according to Anderson.

The America 250 celebration is intended to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 2026, marking America’s Semiquincentennial.

In the realm of education, the Logan Library will partner with USU to host an ongoing America 250 Lecture Series that will begin on Mar. 21 and run through December.

That series of lectures will be held on the third Saturday of each month at 4 p.m. in the community room of the Logan Library.

The city library will also host two summer film series in June, July and August.

The film series for adults will explore American history and civics on the second and third Thursdays during those months at 6 p.m.

The Kids America 250 Film Series will offer family friendly screenings at 1 p.m. on those same days.

The city will also stage a Resident Academy 2.0 during the fall of 2026, providing a inside look at the city operations, including workshops highlighting the Logan Public Works, Fire, Police, Environmental and Finance departments.

In terms of community engagement, Logan City employees have committed to donating 75,000 hours of personal time to local neighborhoods, non-profits and community group during 2026.

Residents are encouraged to work alongside city staffers to create lasting impacts across Cache Valley.

Under its “Plant a Tree with Me” program, the city will also invest in 250 trees to be planted in public spaces during October. Anderson challenges local residents to match this effort with an additional 250 trees to beautify the city’s urban forest.

To engage younger residents, Anderson explains that the city will partner with the Logan City School District to launch “Project Inspire.”

That program will invite students at USU, Logan High and Mt. Logan Middle School to apply for one of nine $500 grants to fund creative projects that improve the community.

With an overall theme of “Dream Big and Execute Small,” the application deadline for these projects is Mar. 20.

A number of local milestone events are also slated to take place around the official semiquincentennial holiday, Anderson emphasizes.

Activities and concerts are planned at the Carole and Jim Laub Plaza and at Willow Park on July 3, including an expanded fireworks display at 10 p.m.

A community concert will also be presented from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Laub Plaza on July 4.

The city will also sponsor the traditional Pioneer Day Parade, activities and fireworks on July 24.

The national America250 organization is a non-partisan group chartered to reflect on our nation’s past, strengthen our love of country and renew our commitment to the ideals of democracy through programs that educate, engage and unite us as a nation.

The America 250 celebration is expected to foster shared experiences that spark imagination, showcase the rich tapestry of our American stories, inspire service in our communities, honor the enduring strength and celebrate the resilience of the United States of America.
