LOGAN — A Mendon man is facing multiple felony charges after police say he stole more than $10,000 in cash and merchandise while working at the Home Depot store in Logan.

Jacob Douglas Madsen, 18, was charged Tuesday in Logan’s 1st District Court with theft of over $5,000 and unlawful use of technology to defraud, both second-degree felonies.

According to an affidavit of probable cause, the Logan City Police Department launched an investigation after an asset protection manager at the store identified Madsen as a suspect in an internal theft case. Investigators allege that Madsen misappropriated a total of $10,562 through a sophisticated return scheme and direct theft of inventory.

During police questioning, Madsen reportedly admitted to manipulating the store’s point-of-sale system. He allegedly saved customer cash receipts and, when subsequent customers requested returns, would process the transactions using the previous receipts to pocket the cash. According to the police report, Madsen would stash the money in his employee locker throughout his shift before taking it home.

Beyond the cash scheme, Madsen is also accused of stealing various store items. He allegedly staged merchandise near store exits throughout his shift, retrieving the goods and walking out with them at the end of his work day.

Madsen was arrested in May 21 and booked into the Cache County Jail. He was later released pending prosecution for the alleged fraud and theft.

Local law enforcement officials stated the investigation was initiated after the store’s asset protection team discovered discrepancies and interviewed the employee, leading to the involvement of the Logan police. The case remains open as it moves through the court system.

Individuals arrested and charged in complaints are presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
