LOGAN — The West Nile virus has been detected in mosquito samples collected near the Logan City Landfill, according to a Monday announcement from the Logan City Mosquito Abatement District.

Rex Davis with Logan City Mosquito Abatement said the Utah State Public Health Laboratory informed the district that two mosquito samples recently tested positive for the virus.

In response, the mosquito abatement district will continue its surveillance and control efforts, which include using larvicide to prevent mosquito development and adulticide through nighttime fogging. Fogging is conducted at dusk and night when the virus-carrying Culex mosquito species are most active.

Residents are encouraged to take precautions to protect themselves, including:

  • Using insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, or other approved active ingredients.
  • Draining standing water from yards, including from old tires, plant trays, and buckets.
  • Wearing long sleeves and pants between dusk and dawn.
  • Ensuring window and door screens are in good repair.
  • Keeping weeds and tall grass cut short, as mosquitoes rest in these areas during the day.
