LOGAN — Utah State University has successfully secured the remainder of its previously withheld state funding after a legislative committee unanimously approved the institution’s revised strategic reinvestment plan Wednesday night.
The Utah Legislature’s Executive Appropriations Committee signed off on the plan without discussion, officially releasing $8.8 million to the university. This substantial amount represents the remaining 70% of the university’s allocated state funds that had been temporarily tied to a rigorous legislative review process.
This final approval marks the conclusion of a multifaceted, months-long evaluation by state lawmakers. On Dec. 9, 2025, USU President Brad L. Mortensen presented the university’s initial revised plan to the committee. At that time, legislators agreed to release 30% of the funds but opted to hold the remaining majority pending the completion of a performance audit by the Utah Legislative Auditor General, as well as the university’s official response to those findings.
Mortensen announced the complete funding release in a Thursday email to university faculty and staff. He noted that the committee’s swift, unanimous approval serves as a positive reflection on USU’s handling of the audit and the successful adjustments made to the strategic reinvestment plan.
“I deeply appreciate the work and support across the university over the past several months that helped position us for this success,” Mortensen wrote in the campus-wide address, thanking colleagues for their ongoing dedication to the institution and its students.
To discuss the outcome and provide a broader legislative update, Mortensen has scheduled a university town hall for 2:30 p.m. on Friday, March 6. The gathering will take place in the Eccles Conference Center auditorium on the Logan campus and will feature a question-and-answer session.
