NORTH SALT LAKE — A 19-year-old Logan woman faces a felony charge after police say she shattered nearly two dozen windows at a church meetinghouse in North Salt Lake.
According to court records, Melissa Miya Lewis was charged with property damage or destruction valuing more than $5,000, a second-degree felony, and criminal trespassing, a class B misdemeanor.
Officers with the North Salt Lake Police Department reportedly responded to a meetinghouse of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Jan. 31. A witness reported hearing glass breaking and observed an individual entering the closed building.
Upon arrival, officers detained Lewis, who matched the witness’s description. According to police, Lewis admitted to breaking the windows by throwing rocks but told investigators she did not know why she wanted to enter the building or why she caused the damage. She reportedly noted she had been in trouble previously for throwing rocks at a relative’s vehicle.
Church staff at the scene identified 19 broken windows and a shattered glass door. Law enforcement officials estimated the total cost of repairs at $10,000.
Lewis was booked into the Davis County Jail and subsequently released.
Individuals arrested and charged in complaints are presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
