LOGAN, Utah – Utah State men’s basketball head coach Stew Morrill was recognized by the Utah State legislature on Thursday for his contributions to USU and to the Cache Valley area.

Morrill announced earlier this year that he will be retiring at the end of his 17th season at Utah State and after 40 years within the coaching ranks. Morrill became just the 14th active Division I head coach to notch his 600th career victory, accomplishing the feat during the 2013-14 season, and currently has a career record of 616-291, including a 398-153 mark at Utah State.

Morrill was recognized by both the House and Senate, with his wife Vicki, for “having changed the culture of basketball and exemplifying Utah’s values of compassion and commitment to community during their 17 years in Utah where they have raised four children and have taken into their home over 90 foster children.”

The veteran head coach was also honored for leading the Aggies to 14 straight 20-plus win season and making 13 straight postseason tournaments. Morrill’s success has also included seven conference championships and six postseason conference tournament titles. Morrill has had four players earn All-American honors a total of five times with USU and has earned individual accolades, including five conference Coach of the Year awards and the 2011 Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year by CollegeInsider.com.

Morrill was further recognized for “having graduated more than 90 percent of his student-athletes and bringing recognition to a program of integrity, honest and hard work.”

“I was very honored that the state house and senate chose to recognize my coaching career,” Morrill said of the experience. “It was a privilege to be in front of the people who represent our state.”

Morrill will be back on the court on Feb. 18 when the Aggies travel to San José, Calif. and face San José State at 8 p.m. (MT). The game will be broadcast regionally on ROOT Sports (Comcast Ch. 52/693HD, Dish Network Ch. 414, DirecTV Ch. 683). Fans can also listen to the game live on the Aggie Sports Network with Al Lewis on the call.
