County council candidates Kathryn Beus and Ladd Kennington talk with host Jason Williams on KVNU’s For the People program.

LOGAN — Two candidates running for a seat on the Cache County council for the southeast district were on KVNU’s For the People program last week. Kathryn Beus is a sixth generation south valley resident.

Her family settled in Hyrum many years ago and she has grown up her entire life in Nibley.  Beus said she’s seen a lot of changes with growth in the south part of the county.

“I have just recently been elected to my third term for the Nibley City council, and I’ve immensely enjoyed that, it’s been an amazing experience, and to be a part of such a great community and advocate for our residents.  Because of that, and people have approached me and said ‘hey what do you think about running, and this seat is becoming available. And it piqued my interest, I think I can continue advocating for my people that I love in Nibley, but also expand that to the entire southeast district,” she explained.

Her opponent is Ladd Kennington who was on the same program. He has spent the last six years on the Cache G.O.P. executive committee, he has been a campaign manager and helped out on various campaigns.  Kennington said it just ‘hit him’ that he should run for the Cache County council.

“One day I was just on my home, and I was at the light turning to go up Providence Lane and just felt an overwhelming burning in my soul to run for county council. It was kind of weird, any way I drove home and I parked at my house and I thought “That was really weird!”. Even weirder than that is I don’t remember the drive home or turning at the light or anything else,” Kennington said.

He said he would like to be a voice for positive change through principled conservatism. Beus and Kennington are running for the seat that Gordon Zilles is retiring from after about 18 years on the council.
