LOGAN — A 24-year-old Logan man was sentenced to three months in jail after previously confessing to raping a woman in July 2019. Jayden A. Miller was ordered to report to the Cache County Jail by Wednesday.

Miller was sentenced during a virtual hearing in 1st District Court Monday morning, appearing by web conference with his attorney. He previously accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to forcible sexual abuse, a second-degree felony; and lewdness involving a child, a class A misdemeanor.

In October 2020, prosecutors filed the criminal case against Miller. The crimes occurred around July 2019 and involved an acquaintance of the defendant’s.

During Monday’s sentencing, Cache County Deputy Attorney Ronnie Keller described how the victim became an object for the defendant’s desires and was sexually abused multiple times over several years. He asked the court to sentence Miller to one year in jail.

Defense attorney Shannon Demler acknowledged that his client pushed things too far and was remorseful. He asked for a lighter sentence, explaining that Miller had no criminal history, a promising future, and is receiving counselling and treatment.

A victim advocate read a letter from the victim, explaining that she reported Miller to the police because she didn’t want other women to have to go through what she endured.

Miller was seen sitting silently throughout the hearing. He refused to make any statement.

Judge Angela Fonnesbeck told Miller, the victim’s life has been forever impacted by what he did. She ordered him to serve 105 days in jail but allowed him work release to be able to keep his job.
