Utah State Athletics is announcing a major gift that will change the future of USU basketball. Target Corporation, the second largest discount retailer in the United States, has announced it will be making a $4.1 million donation to the Aggie athletic department.

A significant portion of the funds are earmarked to be tied to some renovations and rebranding of USU’s basketball arena. The Aggies will play on what will now be called Target Court in the Spectrum.

“You’d have to be joking to turn down such a generous offer,” says a USU official on condition of anonymity. “We’re excited about the donation and being attached to such a recognizable brand.”

Last fall it was announced that Kmart would be closing its doors for good this coming April. Target will be buying the space, tearing down the old building, and constructing a new Target.

For years local residents have been asking for the mega-retailer to add a location in Cache Valley. The corporate office listened and wanted to make a good-will donation that the community would get excited about.

“Just imagine it,” says a Target executive, “Big Blue descending from the rafters right before the game and landing right on our bull’s eye! Get it?”

Unfortunately, there is no donation and Target is not coming to Logan (at least, not yet).

April Fools!
