KEMMERER, Wyo. — A 38-year-old Smithfield, Utah man died Saturday night after collapsing in a holding cell during the booking process at the Lincoln County Jail, authorities said.
Tyson J. Alvares, of Smithfield, had been arrested by the Kemmerer Police Department while attending the Oyster Ridge Music Festival, according to a Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office news release. Alvares faced charges of possession of a controlled substance, breach of peace and disorderly conduct. Authorities said he also spat on an officer during the interaction.
Because Alvares admitted to using a controlled substance and displayed highly erratic behavior, emergency medical technicians evaluated and cleared him before he was transported to the jail. He arrived at the facility at approximately 9:30 p.m.
At about 10:20 p.m., Alvares collapsed inside a holding cell. Detention officers noticed he was not breathing and immediately initiated life-saving measures, but he could not be revived.
Loved ones are mourning the loss of Alvares. In a social media post, friend Stacie Lynn extended condolences to Alvares’ mother, Nancy, and expressed gratitude for his longtime support and friendship, calling the sudden loss heartbreaking.
Per department policy, the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation has taken over the investigation into the death.
A memorial fund has been established to help the family of Tyson Alvares cover funeral expenses following his death in Wyoming. Community members and loved ones are seeking donations to support his mother with the upcoming costs.
