Utah has once again been named the best state in the nation by U.S. News & World Report, marking the fourth consecutive year the Beehive State has claimed the top spot in the publication’s annual Best States rankings.
The 2026 rankings evaluate all 50 states using 71 metrics across eight categories: healthcare, education, economy, infrastructure, opportunity, fiscal stability, crime and corrections, and natural environment. The rankings are designed to measure how effectively states serve their residents.
Utah earned top-10 finishes in five of the eight major categories, led by:
- No. 2 in Economy
- No. 2 in Fiscal Stability
- No. 4 in Infrastructure
The state’s weakest showing came in Natural Environment, where it ranked No. 48. Natural Environment weighs air quality, drinking water quality, and pollution.
“Being named the No. 1 state is an honor, but what matters most is what that ranking represents: hardworking people, strong families, and neighbors who look out for one another,” Utah Gov. Spencer Cox said in a statement. “Utah’s success has never been about government. It comes from Utahns who serve, build, innovate, and invest in the future. I’m grateful to everyone who helps make our state the best place to live, work, and raise a family.”
U.S. News Executive Chairman and CEO Eric Gertler said the rankings are intended to help states identify both strengths and areas for improvement.
“These rankings objectively evaluate performance, identify opportunities for improvement and ways to learn from the successes of other states,” Gertler said. “By translating data into actionable insights, the rankings help policymakers, business leaders and residents make informed decisions to improve their lives.”
The top 10 states overall were:
- Utah
- South Dakota
- Minnesota
- North Dakota
- Nebraska
- New Hampshire
- Idaho
- Florida
- Washington
- Vermont.
For neighboring Idaho, the report showed another strong year. The Gem State ranked No. 7 overall and placed third nationally in the Economy category, trailing only Texas and Utah. Other top 10 rankings for Idaho include Fiscal Stability (6th) plus Crime and Corrections (8th). Idaho’s lowest ranking, 30th, came in Education.
According to U.S. News, the rankings are based on 71 performance measures drawn from more than two dozen public data sources. Those measures are grouped into eight weighted categories, with Education (15.79%) and Healthcare (15.51%) carrying the greatest influence on the overall rankings, followed by Economy (12.88%), Infrastructure (12.74%), Opportunity (12.20%), Fiscal Stability (12.19%), Natural Environment (9.69%) and Crime & Corrections (9.01%).
The rankings emphasize measurable outcomes rather than government spending, using metrics such as educational attainment, graduation rates, healthcare quality and access, employment, infrastructure, public safety and environmental quality. U.S. News said the weighting system is based on surveys of more than 56,000 Americans conducted over three survey periods to determine which issues residents consider most important.
