July 17, 1925 – November 21, 2019 – (age 94)

Richard King Magness “Dick” beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend age 94, passed away peacefully on November 21, 2019.

Dick was born July 17, 1925 to Edith Mary King and Morgan James Magness in Tooele, Utah and spent his growing up years in Preston, Idaho, Cache Junction, Utah and Salt Lake City, Utah. Dick was the second oldest of five siblings. One of his fondest memories was his mother’s cooking, especially her roast beef. He was very athletic and excelled at and enjoyed all sports as a teenager, especially football, basketball, baseball and track. His love for sports continued throughout his life.

After moving to Cache Junction, Utah Dick went to a church social in high school where he first saw and met Betty Petersen, and Betty told a friend that night she was going to marry him.

Dick enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and was assigned to the U.S.S. Sperry, where he performed submarine repair and emergency rescue. This is where he learned about diesel engines and worked as a mechanic, a skill set he would use later on in his professional life, by working in the automotive industry. Dick was also a boxer for the navy. He also had a love for flying and received his pilot’s license, which grew into a love for tracking weather and wind patterns.

Throughout the war Dick would write Betty and ended up proposing to her by mail and sending her an engagement ring. The war ended and Dick and Betty were married February 5, 1946. After many years of trying for a child, Dick and Betty adopted their son, Rick in May of 1960. Rick was a great joy to their lives, after waiting for so many years to have a child.

Dick’s love for sports continued on as he raised Rick, coaching his ward softball team for many years, taking him skiing, and teaching him how to fish, camp and golf. Golf was one of his favorite hobbies, and he continued to golf until 94 years of age. Dick and Betty were blessed with 3 grandchildren and Dick loved being a grandpa and a great-grandpa.

After Betty passed away, Dick married Charlene “Chick” Brimley on June 17, 2000. Chick’s 4 children, their spouses, and grandchildren have blessed Dick’s life with their love for him. Dick loved golfing with Chick and her family and they also had many memorable trips and memories together.

Dick had a love and talent for music. One would often hear the music of country/bluegrass legends being played in his home. He loved to play his banjo and his harmonica. He played music for many events, and in recent years loved to play harmonica at two of his favorite breakfast spots, Millcreek Community Center and Sharon’s, where he was known as “Dicky”.

Dick loved to play card games. He grew up learning how to play cards from his parents, and continued to play cards with Betty and Chick. He was playing Canasta the night before he went into the hospital before his passing.

Dick had a love of the Savior and a testimony of the gospel. He often led discussions of the scriptures and always prayed in his home. He loved serving in church callings and sharing the gospel.

Dick was kind and loving towards everyone. His family will cherish his story-telling ability, his famous one-liners and his love for the Utah Jazz, as he faithfully watched them on TV. He has been a wonderful blessing and example in all of our lives and will surely be missed.

Dick’s family would like to thank the caregivers at St. Mark’s Hospital, OneCare Hospice and Holladay Healthcare Center for their tender loving care.
