LOGAN — The 4th annual “Ignite the Light” concert and motivation event will be held Saturday, September 7th from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Cache County Fairgrounds in Logan.
It might seem strange to pair suicide prevention with fun and festival.
But on KVNU’s For the People program on Wednesday, fairgrounds manager Bart Esplin said that’s the point, to get people thinking and talking about suicide prevention differently.
“Yeah, absolutely. Suicide and mental health has always kind of had a stigma attached to that. Our goal and our purpose with this is to bring people together in a positive environment, hopefully get them to some of the resources that can help, if not themselves, family members, friends, those people that are in need,” he explained.
Esplin said most people don’t know where to turn.
“We have all kinds of resources here; we’ve had 30 or 40 resource booths here over the last several years. And those are places people can turn to get help for their loved ones or themselves if they need it.”
The evening includes a motivational speech by a Utah man, Mike Schlappi.
“Several years ago, I believe it was in the (19)80’s, he suffered a gunshot wound accidentally at the hands of someone else, and has been paralyzed ever since then.
“As he speaks, people will learn his story and his positive attitude and all the things that he’s gone on to do and what he has become over the years. It’s simply an amazing story.”
The concert will lead off with artists from Seize the Night Records from 4 to 6 p.m.
Seize the Night Records is a benefit recording label that works with local artists and musicians to raise awareness and funds towards suicide prevention through positivity oriented content creation.
