LOGAN – Keith Paul, the Regional Communications Director for American Red Cross Utah/Nevada Region, wants drivers to be extra careful while traveling this busy holiday season.
Going from one place to another can be difficult for motorists this time of year, especially when weather can go from warm and sunny to below zero and snowy with in minutes.
“As we prepare for holiday gatherings, the American Red Cross of Utah urges drivers to prioritize safety and preparedness during one of the most dangerous travel periods of the year,” he said. “With over 100 million people expected to travel by car this holiday season, it’s critical for drivers to take precautions.”
The National Safety Council predicts there will be 860 traffic fatalities and nearly 100,000 injuries nationwide during the Christmas and New Year’s holiday travel periods. Impaired driving remains the most significant factor, contributing to 37% of traffic fatalities during the Christmas holiday and 34% during New Year’s.
Heidi Ruster, Chief Executive Officer of the American Red Cross Utah/Nevada Region, wants motorists to think beyond the numbers.
“Behind every statistic is a real person and a family whose holiday will never be the same,” she said. “Many of these tragedies can be prevented by simple choices like buckling up, planning a sober ride home and staying focused behind the wheel.”
To ensure safety on the roads, the Red Cross encourages drivers to follow these tips:
- Plan ahead: Check weather, map your route and share travel plans.
- Pack an emergency kit: Include water, snacks, a first aid kit, flashlight, blanket, jumper cables and a cellphone charger.
- Drive responsibly: Buckle up, avoid distractions and plan for a sober ride.
Besides carrying an emergency kit, the Red Cross encourages families traveling this holiday season to have warm clothing (blankets, hats, gloves, socks), traction aids (sand or cat litter), and tools like an ice scraper and a small shovel on hand to stay safe if stranded in cold weather.
