LOGAN — Winter months are an extremely difficult time to collect the blood and platelets needed to supply area hospitals, according to Keith Paul, the regional communications director for the American Red Cross.
To combat this seasonal dip, the American Red Cross is celebrating National Blood Donor Month in January to encourage more donors to step forward.
“The Red Cross teamed up with the National Football League to help encourage donations,” Paul said. Those who donate blood in January will be entered into a drawing for a high-profile prize.
The organization recently launched the Super Bowl LX Gridiron Giving Sweepstakes, offering blood and platelet donors a chance to win a trip for two to Super Bowl LX in the San Francisco Bay Area. Everyone who donates between Jan. 1 and Jan. 25, 2026, will be automatically entered for a chance to win the prize package, which includes airfare, hotel accommodations, and a $1,000 gift card.
The sweepstakes arrives during a historically challenging period for collections. Winter weather, increased travel, and seasonal illnesses like the cold and flu often reduce donor turnout while hospital demand for life-saving treatments remains constant.
“Cache Valley and surrounding areas had a good year in 2025 when it came to donations,” Paul said. He noted that the organization was pleased with the reception from the Logan area.
The American Red Cross continues to urge donors of all types—especially those with Type O blood—to schedule appointments to help replenish the local supply.
