Friends and neighbors came together on Thursday for more than a turkey dinner, but to help each other dig out after a record-breaking early season snow storm.  Some of the reports from around Cache Valley as far as snowfall since midnight Thursday morning include 13-inches reported at KVNU’s weather reporting station.

Other areas received even more snow, such as 18-inches in Paradise and Petersboro, 21-inches in Hyrum and a report of 26-inches in Clarkston.  The National Weather Service reports that snow is expected to redevelop in Northern Utah bringing in possibly another 2 to 6 inches early Friday.  Snow could become heavy at times on Black Friday, on what is the considered the busiest shopping day of the year, and continue at times through Friday night.

By Saturday, snow will be ending in southern Utah and gradually taper off across northern Utah by afternoon.   As of late Thursday night, Wellsville Canyon (U.S. 89/91) was reporting winter driving conditions, meaning 4-wheel drive or snow tires are required.  Logan Canyon had snowpacked conditions and  road conditions on U.S. 91 heading into Idaho  and S.R. 30 were reported to be wet to slushy.  The previous record snow for November 28th at KVNU was 4.5-inches set in 1975.

According to www.ready.gov during  major winter storms and their aftermath, limit your time outside. If you need to go outside, then wear layers of warm clothing. Watch for signs of frostbite and hypothermia.  Also, reduce the risk of a heart attack by avoiding overexertion when shoveling snow. And check on neighbors. Older adults and young children are more at risk in extreme cold.

A Winter Storm Warning continues for the area through 10a.m. Saturday morning.
