LOGAN — A 19-year-old Providence man was arrested on felony weapons charges after a Cache County Sheriff’s deputy reportedly discovered a handgun and a machete in his vehicle Saturday night.

Stefan Alexander Sendel was stopped by law enforcement at about 9:20 p.m. Saturday while driving a white Dodge Ram 1500 near 600 West and 400 South in Logan. The deputy contacted Sendel, the vehicle’s registered owner, after a records check indicated he did not possess a driver’s license.

According to an affidavit of probable cause, Sendel provided an Idaho license but acknowledged he had resided in Utah for a substantial amount of time, which would require him to obtain a Utah driver’s license. During the stop, it was discovered that Sendel is currently on probation with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office for prior controlled substance charges.

When the deputy asked Sendel to exit the vehicle, the officer observed a Glock handgun located in the driver’s side door. Because of his probationary status for prior controlled substance abuse, Sendel is classified as a Category I restricted person and is legally prohibited from possessing a dangerous weapon. A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed a large machete in the rear passenger area.

Following his arrest, Sendel was booked into the Cache County Jail.

Sendel appeared Monday morning in Logan’s First District Court. He was charged with two counts of prohibited dangerous weapon conduct, a second and third-degree felony for the two suspected weapons, and infractions for possessing tobacco or an e-cigarette and having no valid license.

While being questioned, Sendel admitted that he was on probation but had not been in contact with his probation officer for over a year.

Individuals arrested and charged in complaints are presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
