Curtis D. Rudd booking photo from the Cache County Jail

LOGAN — A 74-year-old Nibley man has confessed to sexually assaulting a young girl several years ago. Curtis D. Rudd was originally arrested in August 2022 after an investigation by Cache County Sheriff’s deputies.

According to court records, Rudd participated in a virtual hearing Wednesday, Feb. 28, in Logan’s 1st District Court. He waived his right to a fair trial and accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to an amended count of aggravated sexual abuse of a child, a first-degree felony.

According to prosecutors, the father of the victim contacted law enforcement after Rudd disclosed the crime to him. The defendant admitted to inappropriately touching the young girl in 2019, while he was caring for the child at his home.

The father told Cache County Sheriff’s deputies, Rudd had first confessed the crime to his church clergy. Multiple family members later verified the defendant had disclosed the same incident to them, “saying he made a huge mistake and would probably be going to jail,” according to law enforcement.

Deputies determined the juvenile victim would have been an infant at the time of the incident.

The case had been scheduled to go to trial March 15.

During Wednesday’s court appearance, Judge Spencer Walsh accepted Rudd’s plea deal and canceled the upcoming jury trial.

Rudd remains out of jail on $25,000 bond. He is scheduled to be sentenced April 15 and could face up to life in prison.
