LOGAN – Disc golfers in Cache Valley now have another place to play a round of the growing sport. A new, permanent course was officially opened Wednesday night at the Cache County Fairgrounds. The $9,000 course, which was funded completely by private individuals and donations from businesses, will be free of charge to anybody who wants to play.
“Disc golf in Cache Valley is ready to explode,” said Kirk Salisbury, who is on the governing board of the Cache Valley Disc Golf Club. “This is actually the fourth permanent course in the valley. Three of those courses have actually come in within the last six months. This particular course is one of the best – well this is the best course in Cache Valley. This is one of the best in the state.”
Disc golf, like traditional golf has a course that is divided into 18 holes. Each hole has a certain number given for par and scoring is the same. Instead of holes in the ground for targets, disc golfers throw discs into metal baskets.
“It’s an incredibly affordable sport,” Salisbury said. “So unlike ball golf, you don’t have expensive green fees. The courses are free to play. The equipment can cost anywhere from $7 to $15 per disc.”
According to Salisbury, disc golf is one of the fastest growing sports in the country, and competition ranges from casual to extremely competitive.
“You can be as casual about it as you’d like and as recreational about it as you’d like,” he said. “But at the same time there’s a Professional Disc Golf Association where there are tournaments throughout the United States and there are people who make a living just off of disc golf.”
Anyone is allowed to go play the course on their own time, but they are also invited to go play a round with the disc golf club every Thursday at 5:30 p.m. or at one of its many tournaments. Information can be found on the disc golf club’s website.
