LOGAN — A domestic violence suspect died Friday morning following a pursuit and an officer-involved shooting in southwest Logan, according to police.
Logan City Police Lt. Brett Randall said the incident began around 9 a.m. when Cache County Sheriff’s Office deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop on 48-year-old Roger Dean Campbell near 1500 W. 600 S. Deputies were actively investigating allegations that Campbell had violated a pretrial protective order. The order had been issued following a prior arrest for domestic violence offenses.
According to preliminary evidence, Campbell refused to comply with the deputies’ attempts to take him into custody and fled the scene in his vehicle. Campbell drove into a nearby neighborhood to evade law enforcement. During the ensuing confrontation, one of the deputies fired shots.
Following the gunfire, Campbell crashed his vehicle into a tree. Deputies at the scene immediately began rendering medical aid until paramedics arrived to take over lifesaving efforts. Despite these measures, Campbell was pronounced dead at the scene.
Randall explained that at this point investigators are unsure whether Campbell was killed by the gunfire or the crash into the tree. “We just don’t know,” Randall said, explaining that it will be up to the Utah State Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the exact cause of death.
In accordance with standard procedure for officer-involved critical incidents, the Northern Utah Critical Incident Team has been activated to lead the investigation. Officials have not yet released information regarding how many shots were fired or whether Campbell was armed.
No other injuries were reported. The deputy was placed on administrative leave, pending the outcome of the investigation.
Randall expressed gratitude to assisting personnel, including officers from multiple valley agencies, the Logan City Fire Department, and investigators from the Cache County Attorney’s Office.
