BANNOCK COUNTY, Idaho — A 52-year-old man died early Tuesday morning after his vehicle struck a semi-trailer that had become disconnected from its truck on U.S. Highway 30, near Pocatello.
The crash occurred at approximately 3:54 a.m. near milepost 332, according to the Idaho State Police. Investigators say a Freightliner semi-truck, occupied by a 20-year-old Pocatello man and a 24-year-old Idaho Falls man, was traveling eastbound when its trailer detached.
The trailer came to a rest in the westbound lane, where it was struck by a westbound silver Mercury Grand Marquis. The driver of the Mercury, whose identity has not yet been released, was wearing a seatbelt but died from his injuries at the scene.
Traffic was blocked in both directions for approximately six hours while emergency crews cleared the wreckage. The Idaho State Police are continuing to investigate the cause of the equipment failure.
