LOGAN — The Utah Highway Patrol has arrested a 21-year-old man, accused of causing an accident in September that killed 42-year-old Leigh Purser of Richmond.
Sgt. Jason Kendrick said troopers arrested Kalin Menlove-McGinni Friday night at his place of employment. He was booked into the Cache County Jail on an initial offence of negligent homicide, a class A misdemeanor and operating a vehicle without insurance, a class B misdemeanor.
On September 25, Menlove was driving a gray minivan northbound on US 91 near Cove, when he rear ended a black Jeep Wrangler, driven by Purser. The impact pushed the Jeep into the southbound lane, where it was hit again by a Dodge pickup truck.
Purser was not wearing a seat belt and is believed to have died on impact. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His body had to be extricated from the vehicle.
Kendrick said troopers believe Menlove was drowsy and fell asleep, causing him to drift lanes and hit the back of Purser’s Jeep.
“Menlove had only had a couple hours sleep in the days prior to the accident,” said Kendrick. “He should not have been driving.”
Bail has been set at $2360. Formal charges are expected to be filed this next week.
