LOGAN — A 40-year-old Logan man with a lengthy criminal history has been sentenced to prison after admitting to soliciting a teenage girl to have sex with him. Jason Keith Summers was arrested two years ago after blaming his actions on adverse effects from his medication.

According to court records, Summers appeared July 6 in Logan’s First District Court. He confessed to two counts of criminal solicitation of a minor, amended to a second-degree felony.

Judge Angela Fonnesbeck ordered Summers to serve two sentences of one-to-15-years in the Utah State Correctional Facility. The terms will run concurrently with his current sentences.

According to prosecutors, Logan City Police officers began an investigation after the victim reported Summers had sent her text messages, soliciting sexual acts from her. The young girl, who was an acquaintance, was later interviewed at the Children’s Justice Center, providing the messages to police.

Officers later questioned Summers, who claimed he was having a bad reaction to his medications. He said his prescriptions made it hard to communicate and increased his heart rate. Later, he acknowledged the messages didn’t sound good and were inappropriate.

Summers has been incarcerated multiple times during the past 10 years. In June 2018, he approached two boys in Smithfield and threw sulfuric acid on them. The five-year-old had minor burns on his back. The three-year-old sustained more severe burns to his face, eyes and chest. Both had to be hospitalized for treatment.

Summers later tried to flee several times from officers before being arrested, including jumping out of an officer’s patrol car near 400 N. Main Street in Logan. He later accepted a plea deal and was sentenced to serve between one to 15-years in the Utah State Prison.

In 2016, Summers was convicted of discharging a firearm and possession of drugs, after he broke into an LDS Church and then tried to shoot at a neighbor.

It will now be up to the Utah Board of Pardons and Parole to determine when Summers is eligible to be released.
