LOGAN — A 33-year-old Logan man was arrested Thursday following a domestic dis-pute near Utah State University. Michael Yoeseph Shorman was booked into the Cache County Jail on suspected charges of second-degree felony forcible sexual abuse, third-degree felony aggravated assault, misdemeanor unlawful detention, and four misdemeanor counts of domestic violence in the presence of a child.
According to an affidavit of probable cause, the incident occurred April 1 at a residence on Stadium Drive. Utah State police reported that Shorman demanded sex from a woman he was in a relationship with. When the alleged victim refused and fled to an-other room, Shorman followed, prevented her from leaving, and pinned her to a com-puter chair.
The affidavit states Shorman placed his forearm on the woman’s neck, causing her to fear for her life because she could not breathe. During the struggle, the woman suf-fered a bruised leg, bit Shorman’s arm, and attempted to flee. Shorman allegedly pushed her onto a bed, again restricted her airway with his forearm, and forcibly re-moved her pants and underwear.
The woman called 911, prompting Shorman to stop his actions and leave the room. Po-lice noted that four children were present in the home during the incident. Responding officers observed bruises on Shorman’s arm consistent with the victim’s account of the struggle.
According to court records, Shorman made an initial appearance April 3 in Logan’s 1st District Court. He was ordered to remain in jail temporarily without bail, and appear again in court Wednesday.
Individuals arrested and charged in complaints are presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
