LOGAN – Representing the leadership and staff of Logan City, Municipal Council member Ernesto Lopez formally inaugurated the opening the long-awaited underpass trail spanning Main Street in Logan on Saturday, Oct. 24.

In a brief ceremony orchestrated by the Cache Chamber of Commerce prior to the ribbon cutting, Lopez thanked community partners, state officials and the construction firms who helped make the new safe pedestrian crossing of Logan’s busiest street possible.

In addition to Lopez, other notables present at the early morning event included Jamie Andrus, present of the Cache Chamber; Russ Akina, director of Logan Parks & Recreation; Paul Lindhardt, Logan’s director of Public Works; Julie Hollist Terrill of the Cache Valley Visitors’ Bureau; and Joann Bennett, representing the Cache County Council.

Following the ribbon cutting, the participants in a Breast Cancer Awareness Five-Kilometer Race and Fun Run jointly sponsored by Logan and the Cache Chamber paraded through the new underpass.

The well-lighted tunnel under Main Street now connects more than 17 miles of existing east and west trail segments with new trail sections at the Riverwalk and Gateway developments near the entrance to Logan.

Construction of the more than $4 million project began in September of 2025 as a cooperative effort by Logan City officials and the Utah Department of Transportation to create a safe way for cyclists and pedestrians to cross Main Street.

The five-kilometer race and fund run was also planned to celebrate October as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in the United States.
