LOGAN — Refugees have been fleeing Ukraine in the hundreds of thousands over the last month because of the Russian invasion and war. The U.S. is set to welcome at least 100-thousand Ukrainian refugees, but they are apparently not in Utah yet.
On KVNU’s For the People program last Wednesday, Danny Beus of the Cache Refugee and Immigrant Connection (CRIC) said he appreciates the support they get from the community.
And he said he is fairly positive that we will have refugees from that area here soon.
“It does take the federal government to recognize people as refugees. As soon as that happens, I can see us receiving Ukrainian refugees pretty quick,” he said.
Beus said CRIC has been at the forefront of helping refugees from Afghanistan after that country fell to the Taliban.
“CRIC, I believe, is the only non-profit in the state of Utah that has been authorized to resettle Afghan refugees. And so, the International Rescue Committee and Catholic Community Services, which are resettlement agencies, they resettle refugees in Salt Lake County. Outside of Salt Lake County we’re the only ones helping the Afghan refugees directly.”
Beus said that while it’s true that Ukrainian refugees have been in the news lately, there are displaced populations in northern Utah from other areas.
“But there’s so much conflict around the world and refugees here from Ethiopia and Eritrea, the Tigray region, there’s so many people that need our help and support. So, we just welcome the opportunity to discuss these things with you.”
