LOGAN – Recently, Future Farmers of America (FFA) members, 4-H teams, and school groups convened in Beaver County from across the state for the 2024 Utah Envirothon. And this year the winning team came from Logan High School.

The Logan team will now move on to the international NCF-Envirothon competition in Geneva, New York, taking place from July 28th to August 3rd. Comprising the winning squad are Senior Rachel Austin, Junior Ivan Estrada, Junior Lillian Rowe, Senior Alize Dana, and Senior Owen Macdonald, under the guidance of coach Andrew Semadeni, a science teacher at Logan High School.

The statewide competition tests students’ problem-solving skills, public speaking abilities, and environmental knowledge.

South Summit High School secured second place overall, with third place awarded to Uintah High School.

The Envirothon, a comprehensive natural resources competition, encompasses five disciplines: aquatic ecology, forestry, soils, wildlife, and an annual environmental topic. This year’s focus is “Renewable Energy for a Sustainable Future.” The competition also features an oral presentation component where teams present environmental issue solutions to a panel of judges.

The Utah Envirothon serves as the Utah FFA Association State Environmental and Natural Resources Career Development Event, with South Summit High School emerging as the winner in that category.

Furthermore, the Utah Envirothon acts as the qualifying event for the 4-H Forestry Invitational and the National Wildlife Habitat Education Program.
