CACHE COUNTY – When the filing period for candidates in upcoming 2026 state and local election opened on Jan. 2, more than a dozen hopefuls were already queued up to announce their intent to complete for county offices.
In addition to incumbent office holders seeking reelection, a handful of newcomers have also joined the race for county positions, according to County Clerk Bryson Behm.
At state level, incumbent lawmakers Casey Snider and Mike Petersen have filed for reelection in District 5 and District 2 of the Utah House of Representatives respectively.
Incumbent local office holders who have signaled their intent to seek reelection include Behn as County Clerk; George Daines as County Executive; Chad Jensen as County Sheriff; and council members Mark Hurd, Kaythryn Bues and Sandy Goodlander.
Local attorney J. Brett Chambers has filed to seek the post of County Attorney that is currently held by Taylor Sorensen.
Chambers is a partner in the local law firm of Harris, Preston & Chambers, LLC, where he previously made news representing Cliffside residents opposed to a controversial conditional use permit (CUP) granted by Logan City for a 12-person residential treatment facility in the upscale neighborhood.
Sorensen has not yet indicated whether he will seek reelection.
In the county’s Logan 2 district, where incumbent county council member Barbara Tidwell resigned in December, newcomers JoAnn Bennett and Jeffery Wallentine have filed their candidacies.
In non-partisan contests for the Cache County School Board, Randall Bagley, Roger Pulsipher and Teri Rhodes have also filed in Districts 4, 2 and 7 respectively.
The candidate filing period for state and local offices will remain open until 5 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 8.
