WEBER COUNTY — A magnitude 3.3 earthquake rattled northern Utah early Sunday morning, Jan. 4, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The quake struck just after 7:15 a.m. at a location approximately nine miles east of Huntsville. While more than 200 people reported feeling the tremor, there have been no reports of serious injuries or property damage.
Northern Utah sits within the Intermountain seismic belt, a north-south zone of activity that includes the Wasatch Front. Historically, earthquakes with a magnitude of 5.0 or larger occur in this region roughly once every 10 years, while magnitude 6.0 or larger events happen approximately every 50 years. The strongest recorded earthquake in the area was a magnitude 6.6 event in Hansel Valley in 1934.
