LOGAN — Family members have released the names of two brothers who were critically injured Monday morning in a traffic accident in southwest Logan. Kirubel Mesfin, 18, and Surafel Mesfin, 14, both remain in Salt Lake area hospitals with long roads of recovery ahead of them.

The two brothers were traveling Monday morning to Logan High School, when they were involved in a three vehicle crash at 1800 S. 1000 West.

According to police reports, Kirubel was driving a red Nissan Altima eastbound on 1800 South around 7:45 p.m. It is suspected that he was either attempting to cross or turn left onto 1000 West, when he pulled in front of a water-truck that was traveling southbound.

The truck smashed into the driver’s side of the car, spinning it into a Chevy Spark that was in the turn lane, waiting to go west onto 1800 South.

First crews on the scene reported Kirubel was unconscious and barely breathing. Surafel was alert but unable to get out of the car. Both had to be extricated before being transported to Logan Regional Hospital by paramedics.

Ben Kiflom, the brother’s uncle said Kirubel sustained the worst injuries. Within the span of four hours, he underwent multiple emergency brain and heart surgeries that have been successful. More procedures are planned to repair his broken arms, wrists, hips and spine.

Meanwhile, Surafel also remains hospitalized but is in a stable condition.

Kiflom said Kirubel is a senior at Logan High and is passionate about soccer and academics. He is set to graduate this May with plans of attending college after. Surafel is a sophomore, and also passionate about his studies and involvement in student government.

Logan City School District spokesperson Shana Longhurst said school administrators are overwhelmed, but not surprised, by the community outpouring of concern for the brothers and the desire to assist the family as they navigate through this trial.

Multiple donation accounts have been created by relatives, friends and soccer teammates, to raise money for the family’s medical expenses.
A GoFundMe account has been created by Kiflom, called the Kirubel & Surafel Mesfin – Medical Assistance.

Two Venmo accounts have been organized, one by supporters of the Logan High School Soccer team, where Kirubel was one of the managers. It is named @Mesfin Family Fundraiser. The second was set up by a Ridgeline High School soccer parent and is titled @lauragarvert.

Donations can also be made in person at any Zions Bank to the Natalie L. Norris donation account.

Kiflom said, “We believe it’s a miracle that the two brothers have survived and know that what the family needs most is our community coming together to show them our love and support. Thank you for all your thoughts and prayers.”
