Candidate for Cache County Auditor, Matt Funk, talks to KVNU For the People host Jason Williams.

LOGAN — In a series of candidate spotlights, KVNU’s For the People program on Tuesday featured Cache County Auditor candidate Matt Funk.

Recently the Cache County Council separated the work of the auditor from the county clerks office where the two tasks had been combined for many years.

Funk talked about what prompted him to run for the office.

“Well, I’m a lifelong Cache Valley resident, born and raised on the family farm in Richmond, and I’m a Certified Public Accountant with more than 20 years of experience. I recently retired from the justice court bench after 15 years.

And what brought me to this point to file to run as Cache County Auditor, is that Cache County finances are in a real mess. Last year the county underwent two audits, one was done by the state of Utah, the state auditors office, and the other was commissioned by the council, a special investigative audit.,” he said.

Funk said, frankly, what those audits uncovered involved fraud and corruption.

“The first audit found employees arranging illegal raises for themselves, it found weak internal controls, poor contract management. And it nearly cost the taxpayers of Cache County a million dollars in lost state funding.”

He said, had that gone through, the budget cuts would have been devastating and that would have been seen in every department.

Funk said he is the only outside candidate for the position, as the other opponents all work for county administration.

He said he is the only person who has not been entangled in the problems of the past and the only one not to have an axe to grind or favors to repay.

Funk explained, “I didn’t create the mess with these audits, but I am willing to fix it.”
