CACHE COUNTY – Officials here have announced the acquisition of another major land purchase under the Cache County Open Space Bond program.
The $1.9 million purchase above Smithfield represents the second major acquisition in the county’s ongoing commitment to preserve open space, protect natural resources and enhance outdoor recreation opportunities, according to Cache County Executive David Zook.
“It protects a vital natural corridor above Smithfield,” Zook adds, “while also providing a critical link for the Bonneville Shoreline Trail.”

Formerly the Chambers Farm, the 557 acres of scenic foothill land is located east of Smithfield near 190 South, 1600 East.
Nestled above the city and stretching from Birch Canyon Road to Smithfield Dry Canyon, county officials say the recently acquired land features rolling hills; seasonal flowing water and a pond; sweeping valley views; and, diverse terrain well-suited for hiking, wildlife and trail development.
The property also offers rolling hillsides blanketed with wildflowers, scenic ridgelines and panoramic views of Cache Valley and the Wellsville Mountains.

“That’s just a glimpse into the remarkable experiences this land will provide future generations,” Zook emphasized.
Currently zoned for agricultural use, the Chambers Farm property has historically served as a grazing and planting area.
Cache County officials say they plan to work collaboratively with local partners and stakeholders in determining public access and trail development, while maintaining the landscape’s natural character.

This purchase aligns with Cache’s County’s long-term Open Space and Trails Master Plan, according to a press release dated June 12.
That master plan emphasizes the importance of protecting foothill landscapes, expanding trail networks and promoting health, quality of life and environmental stewardship.
