LOGAN – This Saturday, Oct. 26, Center Street in Logan will be filled with women in black pointy hats, long black hair and face paint for the annual Center Street Witches Dance and Halloween Festival. Some of the witches will be scary, and some will be dressed as good witches.
The annual celebration will be from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. with food trucks, cornhole, crafts, live music and a movie ”Casper the Friendly Ghost,” with other fun activities.
Chelsea Funk, a businesswoman in downtown Logan, has been performing with the annual Witch Dance group for about five years. They call themselves “Logan Hocus Pocus.”
“It has always been on Center Street. At first, we did it at the area between 1st and 2nd West,” Funk said. “Then the city got involved and wanted us to get some basic permits.”
When the city saw how popular the dance was, they decided to get involved and it was moved to the Center Street Plaza, she said.
Funk is a real estate broker in downtown Logan, and she said the witches dance is an international thing, and she thought it originated in Germany.
“I saw the witches dance when I was younger and thought it was the greatest thing ever,” she said. “Some people think we are a cult, we aren’t. We’re just a bunch of ladies who like to have a good time.”
Some years they have about a hundred participants and last year it was really cold, so they only had about 75 dancers with them. Funk thought in Logan the Witches Dance has been going for about eight years.
“We dance for retirement centers, Halloween activities like Little Bear Bottoms, craft fairs, the Gardner’s Market and other places when invited,” she said. “It is a fun way to entertain a lot of people, and they seem to like it.”
The Witches Dance will happen about at 7:15 p.m. and 9:45 p.m. during the Halloween Festival and maybe more. They may do a Flash Mob kind of thing sometime that evening.
The festival coincides with the Downtown Alliance Ghost Tour on Saturday.
