A Wellsville man has died after being run over by a vehicle and trailer. Steven Speth, 54, was trying to help stop a Dodge Durango that started rolling down a driveway Sunday evening.

According to the Cache County Sheriffs Office, Speth was working on his semi tractor in his front yard while his wife and daughter were hooking up a small utility trailer to the Durango. A grandson, who is under the age of three, was in the back seat of the vehicle and climbed into the driver seat.

The child was able to pull the shift lever out of park and, because of the incline of the driveway, the vehicle started to roll. Speth saw his wife and daughter trying to get into the vehicle to stop it. He ran over to assist.

It is not known if Speth slipped or fell but he was run over by the trailer. The vehicle and trailer traveled about a half block before it crashed into a parked truck. The child was not injured in the crash.

Officers arrived on scene just after 5 p.m. Speth was found semi-conscious in the roadway. He was then transported to Logan Regional Hospital in extremely critical condition but passed away at approximately 8 p.m.

The investigation is still ongoing at this time.
