LOGAN — A 51-year-old Weber County man died Thursday after collapsing while snowmobiling in a remote area of Cache Valley, according to authorities. The incident was reported just before 5 p.m. in Scare Canyon, east of Avon.

Cache County Sheriff’s Lt. Roy Hall said the man was riding with a group about 10 miles south of Hardware Ranch. Around 4:30 p.m. he began complaining of breathing issues and stopped his snowmobile.

The other riders went to an area with cell service so that they could make a phone call for help. After returning, they noticed the man was no longer on the snowmobile, but was laying on the ground unresponsive.

After finding the man collapsed, the group attempted life-saving efforts for about 25 minutes with no success, Hall reported. Search and rescue teams, deputies and a medical helicopter responded quickly but were unable to revive the snowmobiler.

He was pronounced dead by a medical examiner on scene.

Search and rescue crews used snow vehicles to recover the man and transport him to the Hardware Ranch parking area, where his body was released to a mortuary.

“Out of respect to the deceased and those close to him,” Hall said, “the name of the individual remains undisclosed at this time to allow for next of kin to be located and notified.”

The sheriff’s office is investigating the death.
