LOGAN — Recent inclement weather has delayed progress on the Main St. trail undercrossing project in Logan, keeping traffic restricted to one lane in each direction until late Wednesday.
Utah Department of Transportation officials said unseasonably cool temperatures have prevented crews from laying asphalt on the newly installed western half of the pedestrian culvert near 600 South. Paving is expected to begin midday Wednesday once temperatures reach the required threshold, allowing two lanes of traffic in each direction to reopen by Wednesday evening.
Commuters traveling north into Cache Valley for Utah State University events are advised to allow an extra 20 minutes for travel. While passing through the construction zone, drivers should expect tight lane spaces as equipment occupies the center turn lane.
The return to two lanes will be short-lived. Starting Monday, May 4, traffic will shift to the west side of the road and return to a single lane in each direction while crews install the eastern half of the culvert. During this phase, 640 South will be closed, though 700 South will remain open for right-turning traffic.
UDOT anticipates moderate to heavy congestion during peak times next week and strongly encourages drivers to utilize the zipper merge technique, which can reduce overall congestion by up to 40%.
The undercrossing project, a partnership between UDOT and Logan City, addresses a critical gap in the local trail network. Once completed, the culvert will allow pedestrians to safely cross under Main Street, seamlessly connecting the trails near the Logan River Golf Course with those extending toward Logan Canyon.
