CACHE COUNTY – Local officials here have announced that Smithfield Canyon Road east of Smithfield will be open to traffic on Monday, Sept. 7 in observance of the Labor Day holiday.
Starting Aug. 31, the canyon road above Smithfield was closed from Monday through Thursday for a projected period of six weeks to allow for the construction of a new city waterline.
Officials say those closures will restrict access to National Forest land and recreational areas in Smithfield Canyon and limit the ability of large vehicles to turn around in the canyon.
Although access to the canyon will be allowed on weekends during the construction period, officials warn that motorists should plan ahead and allow themselves additional travel time.
Motorists are advised to use caution as traffic will be reduced to a single lane through the construction zone beginning at 2600 East.
As access through active work zones may also be temporarily restricted or delayed, drivers should follow all posted signs, barricades and instructions from construction personnel.
Finally, motorists are advised to plan for possible delays and remain alert for construction equipment operating in the roadway.
