SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Department of Public Safety’s Division of Emergency Management is inviting residents, schools, and businesses to participate in the Great Utah ShakeOut, the state’s largest annual earthquake drill, on Thursday at 10:15 a.m.
With most of the state’s population residing near active fault lines, emergency officials warn that the Wasatch Fault Zone has a significant probability of producing a major earthquake within the next 50 years. The drill aims to prepare Utahns for a seismic event that could result in widespread injuries, fatalities, and economic loss.
Once again, local radio stations within the Cache Valley Media Group will participate in the drill. Organizers hope to surpass 1 million participants this year, building on the more than 900,000 who took part in last year’s event.
How to Participate
At 10:15 a.m. on Thursday, participants are encouraged to practice the recommended earthquake safety protocol for one minute:
- Drop: Drop down to the ground.
- Cover: Take cover under a sturdy desk or table.
- Hold On: Hold on until the simulated shaking stops.
Registration for the event is free and can be completed online at ShakeOut.org/Utah.
Preparedness Recommendations
The Division of Emergency Management encourages Utahns to use the ShakeOut as an opportunity to review their long-term safety measures:
- Create a plan: Establish family meeting locations and communication strategies.
- Stock emergency supplies: Maintain a basic emergency kit with enough essentials to last at least 72 hours.
- Keep gear accessible: Store a flashlight and sturdy shoes next to your bed.
- Secure your home: Fasten heavy furniture, appliances, and wall hangings to the wall. Ensure water heaters are secured with earthquake straps and flexible gas connectors.
