SALT LAKE CITY — Utah traffic fatalities fell to their lowest level since 2019, according to preliminary 2025 year-end data released Tuesday by state transportation and public safety officials.
The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) and the Department of Public Safety (DPS) reported 264 road deaths in 2025, a decrease from 277 in 2024. Despite the overall improvement, officials expressed alarm over sharp increases in specific categories, particularly among teenagers and motorcyclists.
Teen fatalities nearly doubled, rising from 18 in 2024 to 31 in 2025.
In November, two teenagers, 17-year-old CJ Fiefia and 14-year-old Xylie Hutchinson, died following a collision on SR-165 in Providence where an unrestrained group of five teens skidded into oncoming traffic. Three other teenagers were hospitalized in critical condition, while five occupants of the second vehicle sustained minor injuries.
“Crashes involving young drivers are often tied to inexperience, distractions and risky behaviors,” the departments noted in a joint statement. Meanwhile, motorcyclist deaths surged by 32%, emphasizing the ongoing vulnerability of riders.
“Behind every number is a person, and a family forever changed,” said Shaunna Burbidge, Zero Fatalities program manager.
Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Mike Alexander emphasized that most of these tragedies remain preventable through sober, focused driving and seat belt use. Officials noted the 2025 figures remain preliminary as final reports are processed.
