LOGAN – The 2024-25 Theatre Arts season at Utah State University will continue with the debut of Between the Lines at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 15.
The relatively new fantasy musical production is based on a novel by Timothy Allen McDonald and Jody Picoult, which was adapted to the stage by Elyssa Samuel and Kate Anderson.
Between the Lines follows Delilah, an outsider in a new school, trying to cope with her parents’ recent divorce and the stigma of having accidentally injured the most popular girl in her class.
Under those circumstances, who could blame her for seeking comfort in her favorite book? But when the line between fantasy and reality begin to blur for Delilah in extraordinary and astonishing ways, she must find her own way to rewrite the end of her story.
The play’s debut at USU will be a regional first here in Utah, according to Richie Call, its producer and the head of the university’s Theatre Arts Department.
The musical opened in Kansas City in 2017, Call explains, and was headed off-Broadway in 2020 but was sidelined by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We like the idea of doing a show that has never been produced here,” he adds. “Usually when a show is building up steam, they’re pretty restrictive about its rights.
“But they opened up the rights for this narrow window of time, so we grabbed them when we could.”
In addition to the debut of Between the Lines on Friday, other evening performances of the musical are slated for 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16; Tuesday, Nov. 19; Wednesday, Nov. 20; Thursday, Nov. 21; and Friday, Nov. 22.
Matinee performances will be presented at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16 and Saturday, Nov. 23.
With the equivalent of a PG-13 rating, Between the Lines is suitable for young adults and older theater-goers.
