LOGAN, Utah – Utah State graduate offensive lineman Alfred Edwards III has been named to the 2022 Outland Trophy Watch List, it was announced Tuesday by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA).

The Outland Trophy is the third-oldest major college football award. Created in 1946 when Dr. John Outland presented the FWAA with a financial contribution to initiate the award, the Outland Trophy has been given to the best interior lineman in college football ever since.

Edwards is one of six Mountain West players named to the 89-player list. A year ago, the 6-foot-7, 325-pounder garnered honorable mention all-MW honors after starting 13 games at left tackle, recording 12.0 knockdowns. Despite missing one game due to injury, he played in 830 snaps and graded out at 88 percent to lead the team.

The recipient of the 2022 Outland Trophy will be announced on Thursday, Dec. 8, as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show. The official presentation to the winner will be made at the Outland Trophy Awards Dinner, sponsored by Werner Enterprises and produced by the Greater Omaha Sports Committee, in Omaha, Nebraska, on Jan. 11, 2023.

Edwards is also a preseason first-team all-MW selection by Athlon Sports and second-team selection by Phil Steele.

Utah State opens the 2022 season at home against Connecticut on Saturday, Aug. 27. The game will be televised nationally on Fox Sports 1, at 2 p.m.
