LOGAN, Utah — With nearly 75% of American adults planning to hit the road this summer, Utah has been ranked the fourth-best state in the nation for summer road trips, according to WalletHub’s 2025 report. The ranking is based on a comprehensive analysis of 32 metrics, including cost, safety, and access to attractions.
Utah earned especially high marks for its scenic drives, ranking third in the nation for access to scenic byways. It also scored well in road safety, placing sixth for the fewest traffic fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles traveled. WalletHub’s analysts noted that the Beehive State combines affordability, road safety, and an abundance of natural and recreational attractions, making it a standout for summer travel.
“Taking a summer road trip can be a very exciting way to experience a new place,” said WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo. “The best states…keep costs low while providing the best driving experience and most fun activities.”
Despite being middle-of-the-pack for hotel costs and vehicle miles traveled per capita, Utah’s performance in critical areas like scenic byway access and low car theft rates helped secure its top-five placement.
Experts contributing to WalletHub’s study also noted road trips are increasingly popular as travelers seek to avoid the unpredictability of air travel.
“With lower gas prices this year, road trips are increasingly attractive,” said Ira L. Rosen of Temple University.
Cache Valley travelers are among those benefiting from Utah’s strengths, with easy access to Logan Canyon Scenic Byway, Bear Lake, and other high-rated destinations.
Idaho was ranked just a few spots below Utah at #7. The Gem State is full of scenic byways and also secured the top ranking in Safety.
