SALT LAKE CITY — Utah is launching a statewide effort to become a leader in quantum technology.

Gov. Spencer Cox signed an executive order Monday creating the Quantum Coordination Council, led by the Governor’s Office of Economic Development.

The council will bring together government, university and industry leaders to coordinate research, attract private investment and federal funding, develop a specialized workforce and help move quantum technologies from laboratories into commercial products.

Cox says Utah already has several advantages, including university researchers, semiconductor and advanced manufacturing companies, a growing technology sector and defense installations such as Hill Air Force Base in Northern Utah.

Quantum technologies could eventually have applications in national security, medicine, energy and manufacturing.

The Utah initiative follows a federal executive order establishing a national strategy for quantum computing, sensing and networking.
