SALT LAKE CITY (AP) – Utah lawmakers have advanced a measure offering more privacy to voters when it comes to their personal information.
The House on Tuesday approved the measure that would keep voters’ home addresses and dates of birth out of reach of political groups, academics and reporters.
North Salt Lake Republican Rep. Becky Edwards, who sponsors the bill, says it would prevent the state from selling the information.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports news media representatives and others have criticized the bill, saying it goes too far and could impede efforts to uncover voter fraud.
Edwards has said the state could still police such fraud. She says some are refusing to register to vote because they don’t want their data made public.
The measure now goes to the Senate.
