LAYTON, Utah (AP) – Officials in two Utah cities say removing trash cans from parks has helped keep the public spaces clean.
Layton parks superintendent Ryan Pickup told The Standard-Examiner (http://bit.ly/1qbhI5a) that the city has kept its 13 parks free of garbage cans for years.
Pickup says the city provides additional containers during special events, like the Fourth of July and festival events.
He says some residents have mentioned annoyance at the lack of trash cans, but officials think the system is working and haven’t seen any compelling evidence to support a policy change.
Farmington City Manager Dave Millheim says his city has a similar policy and has found that the parks get dirtier with garbage cans out. He says people tend to over-fill the receptacles.
