LOGAN – For several years the need to diversify the engineering workforce has received significant attention. People with disabilities have these skills but are not adequately represented in the STEM fields.

About 25 percent of US adults have a disability but just eight percent of scientists and engineers belong to this group.

New research at Utah State University seeks to change the ways students with disabilities are supported in engineering.

USU Assistant Professor Cassandra McCall was awarded a $600,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to advance her research into uncovering the often-invisible barriers students with disabilities face.

In order to identify key issues and solutions to assist engineering students with disabilities, McCall plans to interview and analyze 60 engineering students, faculty and administrators.

With another award of $300,000 from the NSF, McCall will research how disruptive technologies like ChatGPT are changing the landscape of engineering education.
