GARDEN CITY, Utah — A 56-year-old Utah man died Saturday following a deep-water diving incident at Bear Lake, authorities said.

The Rich County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as Greg Jonas of West Valley City.

Emergency personnel were dispatched to the Cisco Beach area of the lake at approximately 1:44 p.m. after receiving a 911 call. According to the sheriff’s office, Jonas was diving with a group in about 90 to 100 feet of water when the incident occurred.

Rangers from the Utah Department of Natural Resources, Rich County medical units, and sheriff’s deputies quickly responded to the scene. Jonas was transported via an Intermountain Flight air ambulance to Logan Regional Hospital, where he later died.

“We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones and all those affected by this tragic loss,” the sheriff’s office said in a public statement.

Authorities have not yet released further details regarding what led to the fatal incident.

The drowning occurred exactly a week after a 17-year-old Arizona boy died near Ideal Beach. Gideon Rowles was using a paddleboard, June 6, when he fell into the water. The teenager was reportedly not wearing a life jacket and became separated from the board.

Emergency personnel quickly responded to the scene and recovered Rowles from the water. Crews immediately attempted life-saving measures, but their efforts were ultimately unsuccessful.
