LOGAN — Wildlife officials were able to capture a bear that was sighted Tuesday afternoon in the Cliffside neighborhood, according to law enforcement.

The Logan City Police Department said the bear was first seen Oct. 1 around 12 p.m., in the backyard of a home along Quail Canyon Drive. It was spotted in surveillance footage posted to Facebook.

Once an Animal Control officer got to the area, the bear was nowhere to be found, police said.

Tuesday evening, DWR officials were able to locate the bear wondering between Hayden Court and Quail Canyon Drive. They were able to continue tracking the animal until biologists were able to tranquilize it.

Law enforcement initiated a reverse 911 call to neighbors, asking them to remain in their homes until the bear was safely moved out of the neighborhood.

DWR officials note that Utah is bear country, and especially so if you live in the foothills or other mountainous parts of the state. They say it is important to properly secure or clean anything in your yard that may attract a bear. Some of those items include:

  • Birdfeeders (both seed and hummingbird)
  • Fruit trees
  • Compost piles
  • Beehives
  • Pet food and water bowls
  • Unsupervised outdoor pets (especially at night)
  • Barbecue grills
